Established more than 40 years ago, Bellwoods Centres is a community-based
not-for-profit organization that is committed to (a) enabling adults with
physical disabilities to live as independently as possible and direct
their own services, and (b) providing individualized services and programs
in a range of living environments in Toronto.
Bellwoods Centres offers non-medical support services, accomodation, and
independent living education to persons 16 years of age and older, with
permanent physical disabilities, who live in Toronto, require assistance
with some or all activities of daily living, and are able to direct their
own services. Clients are permanent residents of Ontario who have a
valid health insurance card. There is no fee for service as funding
is provided by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
Outreach Services are available on a pre-scheduled visitation
basis, throughout the City of Toronto between the hours of 6:00 am and 12
midnight, including: personal grooming and hygiene, dressing /
undressing, assistance with eating, toileting, and tracheostomy care
(where the needs of the person are stable). The Mobile
Independent Living Education (MILE) program provides clients with
options for learning. Staff meet with clients to develop a program
with goals and target dates. MILE is "mobile" because
staff travel to meet with clients in their homes or in other places in the
community (as long as they reside in Toronto).
