Augmented
and / or Alternative Communications
The area
of clinical practice that attempts to compensate for impairment and
disabling patterns of individuals with severe communication disorders.
These services are offered at the following facilities:
The Assistive Devices Program (ADP)
The Ontario Ministry of Health offers an "Assistive Devices
Program" to help people with physically disabling conditions to
live a more comfortable, productive, and satisfying life as members of
the community. To qualify for this assistance, application must be made
through accredited Speech-Language Pathologists, and/or Occupational
Therapists who have accredited Individual Authorizer status under the
Assistive Devices Program. They will make individual assessments,
recommend treatments, and issue prescriptions for the necessary devices.
The following facilities have therapists with
accredited status under the ADP, and can assist with your application
for funding for equipment:
"Expanded
Level" Clinics
Accredited by the Assistive Devices Program (ADP),
this level of service sees clients with complex clinical and/or
technical needs. Staff with clinical backgrounds will be working
exclusively in the area, with technologists and engineering services to
support the implementation of high-tech AAC systems. An Expanded Level
service can authorize the full range of communication devices approved
by the ADP Equipment Evaluation Committee:
"General Level" Clinics
This level of service will have met all the
criteria set out by the ADP Peer Review Committee. This service can
provide ADP funding assistance to clients for all prescribable
devices within the "1A" category, in addition to mounting
and communication displays. It brings together a team of AAC experts
with clinical backgrounds, such as Speech-Language Pathology and
Occupational Therapy:
Chiropody
/ Podiatry
Consultations,
assessments and treatments of disorders of the foot, including: nail
surgery, removal of corns and callouses, wound care, biomechanical
assessment and orthotics, are available at these facilities:
Dentistry
The branch of medical
science concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the
teeth and gums. A wide range of dental consultation services, including
assessment, treatment, and therapy is available at the following
facilities:
Dermatology
The branch of medicine
concerned with the skin and its diseases.
Exercise
/ Fitness Therapy and Hydrotherapy
Feeding
& Swallowing Therapy
Access to individual Registered Clinical Dieticians and
Speech-Language pathologists for feeding and swallowing assessments is
part of the comprehensive care service available at the following
facilities. (Referrals to be made for Radiographic Investigation (Videofluoroscopy)
where necessary.)
Gynecology
The branch of medicine concerned with women’s health.
Services include: consultation, assessment, evaluation and counselling.
A physician’s referral is required.
Neurology
The branch of medical science dealing with the nervous
system, both the normal, and in diseases. Consultation service,
assessment, treatment, and therapy services are available at the
following facilities:
Occupational
Therapy
A health care profession concerned with a person’s
performance of their activities of daily living within areas of
self-care, productivity and leisure. Occupational Therapists assist
people of all ages who have physical, mental, emotional or social
problems to reach their maximum functional independence. Occupational
Therapists facilitate, restore, enhance and adapt a person’s
activities and/or environment, to maintain or improve their overall
well-being.
Opthalmology
Dealing with the eye, its anatomy, physiology and
pathology. Consultation, assessment, treatment, and therapy services
available at:
Optometry
The science or practice of testing visual acuity, and
prescribing corrective lenses.
Orthopedics
The branch of surgery specifically concerned with the
preservation and restoration of the function of the skeletal system, its
articulations and associated structures. Orthopedic assessment,
treatment, and therapy services available at:
Orthotics
& Prosthetics
Moulded materials for tissue build-up and prosthetics.

Patient
Care
The provision, at various levels of preparation, of
services that are essential to or helpful in the promotion, maintenance,
and restoration of health and well-being, or in the prevention of
illness of the sick and injured, or of others for any reason unable to
provide such services for themselves. Patient care is provided by
professional nurses, and unregulated health care providers, and is
available in the following facilities:
Physiotherapy
The purpose of Physiotherapy
is to increase quality of life and minimize disability caused by illness,
injury, or ageing, using physical intervention.
For individuals with Multiple
Sclerosis, physical therapy and exercise are used to maintain or increase
flexibility, strength, balance, coordination and fitness levels. Equally
important is to maintain mobility through training and practice and skills such
as walking and transfers, and through prescriptions of the appropriate mobility
aid such as a cane, walker, wheelchair, or scooter. Physiotherapists also
provide client education and health promotion strategies, managing the symptoms
associated with MS, and maintaining physical functions at the highest possible
level.

Therapeutic
Recreation
The use of recreational activities and leisure
experiences to facilitate improvement and/or maintenance of an
individual’s physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual
well-being. The process of therapeutic recreation is to selectively
channel an individual into an activity, to achieve a specific
therapeutic goal that has been identified by the therapist and the
individual
Urology
Concerned with the urinary tract in both male and female,
