Chaplaincy 

Chaplaincy services, worship services and chaplain visitations are available through:


Employment Counselling

Employment Counselling provides career counselling, job placement, peer counselling, technical assessment, employment research, and resume writing.

  • Canadian Paraplegic Association - provides career counselling to persons with mobility impairments and other disabilities.  The goal is to help reintegrate people successfully into the community.

  • Toronto Rehabilitation Institute - Social workers and Occupational Therapists may facilitate and may accompany clients to programs for interviews, etc., and to external vocational assessments / evaluations, e.g. Access to Success (Humber College), and Corebrook Industries.

  • St. Michael's Hospital - MS Clinic

  • Ontario March of Dimes - The Ontario March of Dimes Employment Service is a full rehabilitation service, comprising:  Assessment, Return to work services, Skills Training, Placement, and Supportive Services.


Family / Marriage Counselling

Short term marriage counselling, family counselling, and financial counselling, can be made available to persons with MS, and their families.  Information regarding financial support for programs in the community may also be available:

 


Nutritional Counselling (Clinical Dieticians)

Nutritional Counselling involves the provision of a Nutrition Care Plan (Medical Nutrition Therapy) to meet the client's needs in effective and practical ways.  The care plan, which is devised by the patient, is based upon the Dietician's Nutrition Assessment and the client's nutritional goals.  Counselling helps the client understand the value of meeting nutrition needs as a significant part of their health care and quality of life.


Occupational Therapy

A health care profession concerned with a person’s performance of their activities of daily living, within areas of self-care, productivity, and leisure. Occupational Therapists assist people of all ages who have physical, mental, emotional, and social problems – to reach their maximum functional independence. Occupational Therapists facilitate, restore, enhance and adapt a person’s activities and/or environment to maintain or improve their overall well-being.


Pharmacy

The practice or art of preparing and dispensing drugs.


Psychiatry

The medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental illness.


Psychology

A professional specialty concerned with diagnosing and treating diseases of the brain, emotional disturbances, and behavioural problems (the mind and mental processes.) Formal psychological counselling and support services, including assessments, evaluation, treatment, and psychometric testing are available at:


Self-Help Groups

  • The Anne Johnston Health Station - offers ongoing supportive personal counselling to clients, free of charge, on issues related to self esteem, body image, sexuality and relationships, family issues, crisis intervention, and living with a disability.

  • Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care - specializes in both in and out patient counselling and support programs that may be accessed by older MS patients from the community.

  • The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada - Toronto Chapter - Self-help programs have been designed to meet the needs of individuals with MS, their family members, and friends, health care professionals, and the community at large.  The Chapter has a variety of self-help groups that meet in various locations throughout Toronto.  (Staff members are available to help interested individuals form new self-help groups.)

  • West Park Healthcare Centre (RMSSS) - Offers a monthly Family Dialogue Hour where residents and families have an opportunity to meet with the manager of their service. This enables residents and families to bring forward questions, issues, and concerns, with the objective of ensuring resident-focussed care, and ongoing quality improvements in resident care.


Social Work

The purpose of Social Work it to maximize the quality of life for people by enhancing their psychological and emotional functioning, and by maximizing individual strengths and skills. More broadly, Social Work is responsive to the political, social, and economic changes which impact people, and endeavours to respond to issues which may impact on society at the policy level.
